John Freund Steinfirst

August 22, 1940 - September 24, 2025

John Freund Steinfirst died at his home in San Francisco, September 24, 2025

after a brief but valiant fight against cancer. John celebrated his

85th birthday on August 22 with family and friends. John was

married to Sharon Collins for 33 years. His family includes his twin sister

Susan (deceased 03/19/1997), his older brother Richard, a nephew, two nieces,

10 great nieces and great nephews, a great, great niece and his beloved dog,

Chauncey.

John had a joy for life that was infectious. He delighted in sharing his

love of art, music, travel, food, and good company with his numerous and dear

friends. John and Sharon were supporters of many cultural institutions around

the Bay Area. He was a good friend and mentor to many.

John earned a Master's in Social Work from New York University, a Master's in

Business from Columbia University and a B.A. from Duke University. His career

in social work and social program advocacy included many leadership roles,

culminating in his term as CEO of The Fred Finch Center, Oakland, CA, from

1998 - 2008. He went on to serve as interim CEO for several Bay Area non-profit

agencies and acted as an expert witness. John was active and effective in policy making

and legislative changes in CA and NY in support of children's, youth and family

services.
