Raidelle Eve Newman, age 100, passed away on January 5, 2019. She was born on June 9th, 1918, to Leonora (Glaser) and Joseph J. Hirsch in Oakland CA. Raidelle lived through a century of change, which included the Great Depression, the Second World War, Civil Rights Movement and Space Travel. Graduating from Oakland High School and Healds Business College, she worked for the California Relief Administration during the Great Depression.

Married to Jerome H. Newman on May 13, 1940 until Jerry's death on July 28th 2003, they adopted two sons, Alan Mark and Richard Harman. Tragically both of her sons preceded her in death as well as her sister Gladys Wahlberg and brother Irving H. Hirsch. She is survived by Marcia Newman, her daughter in law, and her grandchildren Jennifer Solomon and Richard A. Newman. In recent years she was very devoted to her nieces and nephews, Judi Stess and Susan Thompson and her Nieces and Nephews, Nathan Hirsh, Brad Hirsch, Kimberley Kalin, Lela Nichol, Samantha Albert and Heather Baschak . She spent her final years at Rossmoor in Walnut creek, CA and we are grateful to caregivers Sarha Hart and Lorena Cuevas.

Raidelle was a member of Temple Sinai in Oakland and Congregation B'nai Israel of Rossmoor and also the National Council of Jewish Women. She gave generously of her time as a volunteer at the Nursery of the Children's Home Society, the Ration board during World War II and helping with tutoring at elementary schools in Oakland.

Jerry and Raidelle traveled extensively throughout the world. Jerry was an amateur photographer and they shared many images, memories and stories about their travels. She frequently hosted family for Passover and holidays at their home on Skyline Boulevard in Oakland. The family will all hold dear the happy memories of those gatherings even as we say goodbye to Raidelle.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Richard H. Newman Memorial Student Loan Fund at Hebrew Free Loan Assoc., 131 Steuart St., Suite 520, San Francisco, CA 94105 or charity of your choice.
